Tokyo Mew Mew started as a manga made by Reiko Yoshida and Mia Ikumi around the year 2002. The manga is composed of seven volumes, and a two volume continuation called Tokyo Mew Mew A La Mode. It was later animated by Studio Pierrot and ran on TV in Japan from April 2002 to March 2003. It has 52 episodes. Tokyo Mew Mew is a story about five girls, Momomiya Ichigo (Mew Ichigo), Aizawa Mint (Mew Mint), Midorikawa Lettuce (Mew Lettuce), Fong Pudding (Mew Pudding), and Fujiwara Zakuro (Mew Zakuro) that were injected with endangered animal DNA in order to fight aliens that wanted to destroy humankind. In April 2003, Tokyopop started to translate and release the first seven volumes of the Tokyo Mew Mew manga. They translated it a little TOO well, sometimes keeping the direct translation from the Japanese sounds, just putting them into english (example: Sutoro Bell Bell). They did keep all of the character's names, though. In February 2004, 4Kids Entertainment announced that they had liscensed the Tokyo Mew Mew anime. In a press release, the show was titled Hollywood Mew Mew. This made many fans outraged at the name change, especially since Tokyopop had kept the original name in the manga release. Other people weren't that surprised, since it was 4Kids, known for messing up anime dubs (examples: Shaman King, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!)
In June 2004, another press release used the name Tokyo Mew Mew in reference to the show. People sighed in relief as they thought that the show would be keeping it's original title. But this would not be the case. The show was believed to start September 18th, along with One Piece and F-Zero: GP Legend, but 4Kids released the new fall schedule for FoxBox, which did not have Tokyo Mew Mew listed. There were many speculations, including an air date in January. But January passed, so the next guess was May or June. But that long wait was not to be, for the show's official air date was February 19th, 2005. After 13 episodes, the show started on reruns for the summer. New episodes restarted September 10th. Currently, Mew Mew Power is not on the air, and it is unknown if more episodes will air. |
