Hi! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Dan, the admin of this server, phobos. Phobos is a homemade server that runs out of my room, is used for a leg rest, table, etc. While there are many upsides to running a homemade server instead of paying a monthly fee for a pay server, there is a major downside that sometimes comes into play, and this is happening soon. I live in a house in a college town with a few friends, and soon I will be moving to a different place with other friends. The lease in my current place ends Sunday, and the lease on the new one starts June 1st, which leaves phobos homeless for those couple of weeks in between. Idealistically, I would've liked to find a place to bring phobos to for that time, however anyone who would be willing to do so is in the same position as me, in between places to live for those weeks. Here's what I have been able to work out. One of my friends has a pay server he runs his site and other things from, and he is allowing me to move the stuff on phobos to his server for those weeks.

How this affects this site, there is a possibility of a temporary URL change for here (possibly SMU as well). Also, these forums (as well as all other forums on phobos) will be turned off as things are being moved to ensure nothing get's lost in the transfer. At this time, I don't know when this will be taking place. I hope to be able to announce it ahead of time, but if I can't, then just see this post as a heads up. It can happen anytime between now and Saturday, so if it seems like there's funky stuff going on, just know that it's most likely me doing the work getting everything from phobos I can moved on to my friend's server.

Hi Dan, nice to meet you.

If the url changes, will this create problems in the finding the new url, or will it have a link from the old url? Do you think any data will be lost? (i.e., will we have to sign up again, with new usernames and passwords, or will our settings transfer also?)

I have good news, the URL will not change, so no worries there. Also, I've done enough server change stuff in the past to not have any data get lost, so there will be no data loss either. However, I'm transferring over to the temp server as I type, so by the time you see this, you'll already know. ^^;

Good news, phobos will be back online sooner than expected. Somehow, we're going to have cable and internet setup right when we get in the house, we just have to pick up the boxes and remote. I would expect phobos to be back online by the coming weekend. Forums will be off when the domain switches back over to phobos, just like they were when it switched over to the temp pay host, I'll announce a more specific time once I'm in my new place and see how getting settled in and everything else is working.

My current plan is to switch back to phobos sometime after work today, so expect the forums to be down tonight as I transfer everything back over. Like when we moved to this temp server, forums will be off on this server and on on phobos, so nothing get's missed when the domain get's pointed over to phobos again.

For the moment, things seem to be working into my favor. So sometime tonight, the forums will be shut off while I do the work to get the domain back to phobos. This should hopefully be within a couple hours, and the forums will be open on phobos so once the name servers point back to phobos, everything is finally back to normal.
