12 "Barechatta, Chisetsuhazure no Sakura Chiru!"
(Identity Revealed! An Out of Season Cherry Tree Falls Away!)
2002- 06-22
Premiere "The Main Mew's Muse" 2005-02-19

A large Godzilla-like monster is attacking a city. Suddenly, Mew Ichigo appears to fight the monster. She does her little pose, and the crowd of people says that she's really cute. The monster attacks and she defeats it with her Ribbon Strawberry Check, making the crowd (which is a bunch of Aoyama clones) cheer. Then, Aoyama appears, and ridicules her for her clothing, ears, and tail. He runs off, leaving Ichigo on the ground yelling after him. Ichigo then gets hit on the head with a book. She was sleeping in class again, and the teacher makes fun of her.
At lunch, her friends Moe and Miwa talk about Ichigo's sleeptalking. Ichigo wonders if she said her posing phrase out loud, when she hears another student say it. The Mew Mew are the topic of the day after appearing on television. Ichigo calls herself stupid for posing on the TV like that. Another student says that they're a fan of the red girl with cat ears and Ichigo starts smirking, but denies it when her friends ask her if she really is smirking.
After school, Ichigo whines about having to go to work and having not talked to Aoyama lately. Of course, Aoyama appears behind her and asks if she's busy. He then invites her to go with him somewhere. Along the way, Ichigo is wondering what he plans to do, when her thoughts go crazy, making her heart race and her ears and tail pop out. So she jumps into a bush. They soon reach a secluded area with a blossoming tree. The tree is blossoming early, and the cicada in the tree has awakened early as well. Aoyama makes a speech about how the cicada calls but will never get an answer. Ichigo seems really touched by this speech.
Ichigo then goes to the cafe, where Pudding asks her why she's smirking. Ichigo again denies that she's smirking and floats off to help someone. Mint remarks that they should have Ichigo work extra hours for being late, and Lettuce remarks that Mint is talking like she works all of the time. She covers her mouth and Mint asks what she meant by that, causing Lettuce to start apoligizing like crazy. Keiichiro then walks out with Zakuro in her new cafe outfit and asks her to serve someone. She does so, and very abruptly. Lettuce remarks that no one will be able to tell that she's the superstar Zakuro Fujiwara with that attitude. After the cafe closes, Keiichiro brings out a cake to celebrate the five Mew Mews coming together. Before they can enjoy their treat, Ryou calls them down to the basement, saying that the real fight has now begun. Kishu is then shown at the cherry blossom tree from before, saying that it's almost time as black petals blow through the air.
In the basement, Ryou explains that someone, aliens like Kishu, is aiding in the destruction of the environment. The girls find out what animal they are bonded with, and Ichigo asks when their bodies will return to normal. Ryou comments that he doesn't know, which makes Ichigo a little depressed.
The next day, Ichigo is happy again, saying that everything should be going right. But later that day, Keiichiro and Ryou discover that the trees are sending out a virus that will kill everyone in Tokyo, and the cherry blossom is the center of the source. The girls transform and go to the park. Aoyama is seen collecting leaves, and then he collapses due to the virus. Kishu appears and taunts Mew Ichigo. They fight, and Kishu offers Ichigo to come with him. The other Mew Mews release their power, as Kishu tries to take Ichigo. Ichigo finally comes to her senses, and jumps into the tree to Kishu's dismay. She releases her power and the virus is destroyed. The cherry blossom tree is now dead, but the cicada is still alive and chirping. Then, Aoyama calls out to Mew Ichigo. Has he figured out her true identity?

And so, I got up at 7:15 AM to prepare myself to watch.

I guess I wasn't prepared enough for this. The show has been turned into crap. The voices are subpar (especially Aoyama), there were insert songs added by some group called the 4Kids Five, and the entire meaning of the show has been scrapped. The show was mostly about saving the environment, not LOVE! There was some love, yes, but not in every little thing! And the ending *cringe* Aoyama ISN'T supposed to know until EPISODE 38!! Just...just...bleh.

How I'm going to last 51 more episodes is a mystery.

Saturday is the one day of the week where I am forced to sit through nine hours of work. Nine hours of doing nothing is tiring, so I try to sleep in as much as I can. This particular Saturday, I said, "Screw sleep!" and woke up at 7 in order to prepare for and watch the premiere of Mew Mew Power.
I was an idiot.
I went into the show having the lowest expectations. And yet, 4Kids still managed go beyond what I expected and produce a horrid, steaming pile of crap which they know will sell well with little girls by adding lots of pointless talk about boyfriends.
My opinions on the names and voices are largely the same as Kari’s. It’s 4Kids, so I wasn’t expecting anything spectacular, or even anything mediocre. The only real surprise is that they seemingly hired a bunch of completely new people. And all of these people sound exactly the same.
Weapons. I don’t have much of a problem with most of the weapons. Purple Dagger is bad, but Morse Code Castanets is the worst. How many little girls will know about Morse Code, anyway?
Music. First, the new opening theme. Burn me alive if you want, I think the song is catchy. It is no replacement for My Sweet Heart, but the song is decent. They could have done a LOT worse. The insert songs were kind of catchy as well, but they didn’t have the get stuck in your head quality that the opening did, which is probably a good thing.
Alterations. My big problem with the alterations is that they made the show focus on boys and love. To me, environmental protection was a big part of the show, and they seemed to completely screw that over in favor of talking about BOYS! OMG!! Personally, I would have thought that environmental protection would have scored better with the parents, but I’m not some super 4Kids executive... And they’re obviously smarter, given their shows and the insane amount of money they have.
Dialogue. Dialogue was not a-mew-sing in the least. If they keep the Mew puns going throughout the series, I will mew-tilate myself. I’M SO WITTY. "Mew Mew Power! Mew Mew Fate! Supernature! Activate!" OMG THEY’RE LIKE CHEERLEADERS!!!
Cuts. ...Why? I never saw much of a point to cutting 3 second scenes, but 4Kids enjoys doing it. It doesn’t have much of a big impact either way, but it’s annoying.
Other. What happened to the cicada? Again, that was a bit of environmentalism that I personally enjoyed. And Mark apparently finding out Zoey’s identity... As a wise friend of mine once said, "wt6f?" Overall, the episode was subpar. I was not expecting Shakespeare. I was not expecting Cowboy Bebop. I wasn’t even expecting Yu Yu Hakusho. I was, however, expecting better than what they delivered. I can only hope that as time goes on, the dub will improve.

Well, we might as well start off with the script. The script...was almost entirely changed. It's like they watched the episode muted, and decided to try to mind read the characters. Most everything that involved the environment was scrapped for love. Now, the background music was completely made by 4Kids. It's basically a bunch of rehashes of the opening. There WERE some silent spots, which I applaud for. But to counter that applause were the two insert songs that they added.

As we all already know, were the name changes, but I'll list them here again for easy reference

Ichigo Momomiya = Zoey Hanson. Her voice is a little squeaky at times, but it's pretty good.

Mint Aizawa = Corina Bucksworth. Her voice just doesn't have that little air of snob like it did in the original. It sounds a lot like Ichigo's.

Lettuce Midorikawa = Bridgette Vedant. Oh, how I miss the cute, quiet voice she had. Another voice that sounds like Ichigo's.

Pudding Fong = Kikki Benjamin. She doesn't sound like a little kid like she should. Then again, they did up her age by 6 years. Ichigo clone voice number 3.

Zakuro Fujiwara = Renee Roberts. The best voice, in my opinion. It's low, she speaks abruptly, and it's the only voice I could pick out if all the characters spoke off-screen.

Masaya Aoyama = Mark. Ew. They ruined his voice. He sounds like an old man now. I understand that they upped his age from 13 to 16, but not all guys have that deep of voice at that age. It just sounds so out of place.

Keiichiro Akasaka = Wesley J. Coolridge. His voice is meh. More on the bad side than the good.

Ryou Shirogane = Elliott Grant. His voice is probably my second favorite one. It fits him nicely.

Masha = Mini Mew. He had one line, and he sounded like Gir from Invader Zim. Cute, but annoying.

Kishu = Dren. His is okay, I guess. It didn't jump out at me as being really good or really bad.

The aliens are now called Cyniclons, but that was expected. It's still kinda strange that they have a name now

Chimera Animals are called Infusors, because they get infused with the parasite things. For some reason, they called the Mew Mews infused. How the Mew Mews got their powers is completely different than how a Chimera Animal is formed.

As for the Mew Mew names (Mew Ichigo and the like)...Those seem to have been dropped completely. They just call each other by their normal names. Kinda ruins the "hiding the secret identity plot." Though that doesn't matter anymore in the dub. But that's a story for another box.

And Cafe Mew Mew keeps it's name. At least something stayed the same.

I think that's it. My first ever comparison box and it's insanely long! Whoo!

The original opening is replaced with the new opening. They kinda have the same meaning on the surface, talking about love and stuff. The dub opening pulls a bunch of scenes from the second version of the opening, the ending, and some episodes, combining them into a jumpy mess of scenes. You can tell they don't go together. The opening's actually kinda catchy. It's sung by Bree Sharp, if you didn't already know.

The introduction where Ichigo introduces herself and talks about the Mew Mews is removed. This'll probably be cut in every episode, so I'm just going to stick this here and not in any other comparison.

The scene that pans up through the city has the text "An ordinary day downtown...when suddenly!" added.

"Mew Mew Strawberry! Metamorphosis!" = "Power Pendant Activate!"

This appears later in the episode, and all five girls say it. They changed it to make it universal. Also changed...

"For the future of Earth, I am at your service, nya!" (and probably all of it's alterations) = "Mew Mew style, Mew Mew grace, Mew Mew power, in your face!" At least for this episode. Who knows, they could make up a witty new saying every episode!

When the crowd is cheering for her, Zoey says "The feeling is mew-tual!" This is the first of many, many "mew" puns to come.

"Ribbon Strawberry Check!" = "Strawberry Bell! Full Power!"

Seems to be another possible universal thing...

Instead of the kids at lunch talking about seeing the Mew Mews on TV last night, they're all talking about Ichigo's sleeptalking during class. Since episode 11 hasn't been shown yet, it more-or-less explains why it was changed. And the next cut.

(8 seconds) The little flashback from episode 11 where the Mew Mews pose is cut. Well, techincally it was moved, but...yeah. And Zakuro's weapon has also been edited to make it less of a cross (more cross stuff is in episode 10)

The protectors of justice!

(5 seconds) The scene where Ichigo is thinking to herself about her dream is cut short in the dub.

Ichigo no baka desu!

"You just put mustard on your pizza."

In the original, Moe was asking Ichigo was smirking. Ichigo was smirking because someone mentioned liking the "red girl" on the TV. Then, in the dub, her so-called friends go on to call her a freak. Oh, those two are SUCH good friends, aren't they?.

"But why is it blooming? It's not even spring yet!"

If it wasn't spring, all the other trees around you wouldn't have leaves and the grass wouldn't be that green. In the original, she said that it wasn't June yet.

The ENTIRE scene with the cherry blossom tree is changed. In the original, Aoyama remarks how it's strange that the tree is blossoming so early, and that there is a lone cicada in the tree calling for a mate that he will never find. In the dub, some story is made up how the tree is over 100 years old and how Mark's great-grandfather proposed to his great-grandmother under this tree and also how every tree and person is different.

Zakuro's abrupt personality is kept in the dub, but instead of being unsociable, Renee delievers the food to the wrong table but doesn't do anything about it.

Bridgette says that Renee might work better with a script and that she might make one for her in her spare time with "key waitress phrases", and Zoey remarks that Renee probably wouldn't rehearse for her "big role at Cafe Mew Mew." She then says she should rehearse for her date with Mark. In the original, they were just talking about how Zakuro being unsociable could hurt business.

(5 seconds) After Kishu mentions that it's almost time, some black petals are shown blowing around. This is cut in the dub.

Freaky petals...

(32 seconds) Ryou's entire speech about the destruction to the environment is cut. It's only the first episode and there's already a half-minute cut...

Part of Ryou's speech

The entire basement scene's meaning is changed. In the original, Ryou speaks about destruction to the environment and how something, the aliens, are helping it. The dub talks about how the Cyniclons are attacking the earth and that the Mew Mews must fight them.

(9 seconds) Still in the basement scene, the part that shows the picture of the Earth, and then slow pans images of all the girls except for Ichigo, is cut.

The Earth...home to over a million species...

"Hello, hello! I have a question! Over here, Ellie!"
"Very funny. The name is Elliott. What is it, Zoey?"

Hardee har har.

"Do you have any idea how many boyfriends she's probably had?"
"How old do you think she was when she started dating?"

In the original, Mint was ranting about Ichigo pretended to have a problem so that Zakuro would be nice to her, and Lettuce's line was asking what a finless porpoise was.

In the original, Ichigo was talking to Masha about having to protect the earth. The dub changes this to Zoey having a bad dream about the Cyniclons attacking and not being able to find Mark.

A silly little insert song was added during the scenes with Ichigo running to school, and then seeing Aoyama wave to her. The original just had her thinking that everything should go right now.

In the original, Ryou and Keiichiro had to search out the source of the virus. Also, they didn't mention Kishu at all. The dub makes it so that they already know who's causing all the trouble. Also in the original, the trees aren't already sending the poison. It's said that will happen if they don't destroy them all at the same time.

And here is the first major screw up of the episode.

First off, instead of "Mew Mew Zakuro! Mew Mew Pudding! Mew Mew Lettuce! Mew Mew Mint! Mew Mew Strawberry! Metamorphosis!" We've got "Mew Mew Fusion! Mew Mew Fate! Supernature, Activate! Power Pendant, Mew-tamorphosis!" Mew Pun #2!

Second, for some odd reason, they added in a bunch of scenes from the other Mew Mews transformations instead of just showing Ichigo's. There's even a part from Pudding's ATTACK stuck in there. It all ends with the scene from episode 11 where their faces are shown and then they pose. Top it off with another silly insert song, and you've got a total of 6 seconds of ADDED footage.

Aaaaaand...we also get to meet Mr. Digital Paint Bucket! In Ichigo's original transformation, she has shadows on her body to show that she's actually not wearing anything. These shadows, but only the ones on the top half of her body, are painted out.

Frontal shadows! (this shot itself was cut)
Backside shadows!

(4 seconds) Where Aoyama pauses for a second before Kishu shows up is cut.

I wonder what he's thinking...

"You better not have done anything to hurt Mark, or I'm gonna mew-tilate you!"

Mew Pun #3!

(4 seconds) The part where Ichigo starts to pose is cut out.

Strike a pose!

(7 seconds) After Ichigo hits Kishu, he pauses for a second before laughing. This pause is cut.

A short pause...

In the original, this is where Kishu says that he'll ask for Ichigo's life to be spared. At first, Kishu was going to kill Ichigo. In the dub, he mentions that he'll spare her life right away, and the battle was only to stall for time.

The dub has Corina, Kikki, Wesley, and Elliott yelling for Zoey to unleash her power. In the original, they didn't know who wasn't attacking yet. Also during this scene, Zakuro's weapon is edited to make it less crossy.

Mmm, stick

(6 seconds) Wahh, the cuts are running rampant! This time it's when Kishu is yelling out to Ichigo before she calls out her weapon.

He's wondering what's going on...

(6 seconds) And again! The scene where Ichigo runs into the cherry blossom tree is cut. What ARE they making all of these cuts for!?

A leap of faith

(2 seconds) The little snippet when Kishu tells Ichigo to stop is...you guessed it, CUT!

Kishu said die! OH NOES!

(2 seconds) It's like they don't want Dren talking to Zoey or something, cause the next time he speaks during Ichigo's attack is cut.

She's just gonna ignore you again.

(3 seconds) The part showing the cicada on the ground was cut, because the plot about the cicada itself was cut!

Meet Mr. Cicada!

(2 seconds) When Aoyama is first shown, he's a little farther away, then they do a close up on him. The far away part is cut. Proabably because it leads into the next part...

Aoyama's probably thinking "wt6f"

And now...the BIGGEST MISTAKE in the entire episode!

In the original, Aoyama calls out to Mew Ichigo, saying "Ichigo?" She turns around and Aoyama says "Ichigo..." again. She puts her hands over her mouth and says, "This can't be!" The screen turns red, and some petals blow by.

In the dub...ohhhhhh, the dub screws the ENTIRE scene up. It has Zoey apoligize for being like this, and Mark ACCEPTS her, saying that everyone is different. Zoey agrees with him, and then there's this shot of Mark smiling! They edited some shot of him with his mouth closed, changing it from a line to a smile. Then Zoey smiles happily.

What the dub did was take 11 seconds from episode 13 and stuck them here, dubbing it so that Mark finds out about Zoey. This is probably why the Mew Mew names were dropped, to make it EASIER for Mark to figure this out! In the original, Aoyama doesn't find out about Ichigo until EPISODE 38, 26 episodes after this one! 4Kids better have done some really creative dubbing for episodes 13-38 to fill up this major plot hole.

The original ending

The next episode preview they added had Mew Pun #4 in it.

"Find out how I went from a normal girl to Super Mew Mew! It's really quite a-mews-ing..."

Oh...I can't wait. *Sarcas-O-Meter blows up*
